Description
Signed 'Dollar' drawing on Halston PR Folder: with Halston event menu card, inscribed to D.D. Ryan. 4to. 1982. Paper folder, holding 8 typed pages and 2 photographs (one colour, one b&w) in 4 sections, with inserted inscribed menu card. Warhol and Halston's friendship is well-known. Warhol produced one of his signature portraits of the prominent 70s fashion designer. An avid host and socialite, Halston was famous for the luxurious parties and promotionals he threw, where an "anything goes" protocol was often in evidence. Warhol was a regular attendee of Halston's functions. Professionally Warhol contributed drawings for a Halston publicity campaign promoting menswear for Fall 1982. This publicity folder dates from that time and boasts a marker drawing of a $ sign on the front, signed by Warhol underneath, just above the Halston brand name. The folder contents include Halston's professional resume, a list of his important clients, a list of licensees, and a professional bio of Halston CEO David Mahoney. There are two photographs, one a b&w portrait of Halston, and one a colour, posed showroom shot featuring the designer with models. A printed menu card from a "Halston Night for Martha Graham", inscribed by Warhol to D.D. Ryan is enclosed. Ryan was an intimate of both Halston and Warhol. An editor at Harper's Bazaar and a regular on the Best Dressed lists of the time she is also credited in developing the famous children's book character Eloise, whose adventures were written about by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight. This folder represents a nice association piece drawing together three prominent cultural and social luminaries of the 70s and 80s, knitting together the worlds of art, design, publishing and commerce.
